Intro: Davis Huber

January 20, 2021

Hi, my name’s Davis. I’m a photographer and a filmmaker and I care deeply about our planet. I’m also the director of this film. I’ve known Chris and William my whole life, they’re like brothers to me.

I won’t tell you that the water from the Great Lakes runs through my veins, or even that my identity is all that tied up with northern Michigan. But I’ve spent enough time there to understand why this is the case for many people — why this is the case for Chris and William. One moment you feel like you’re hiking through a dense forest in Alaska and the next you’re camped on what seems to be a remote beach in the Caribbean (except, of course, for the evergreen trees sprouting out of the sand). It’s an amazing place and one worth fighting for.

When Chris and William first came to me with this project, I didn’t know much about the threats facing Lake Michigan. Then I heard about the issues surrounding Line 5 and I knew there was a story in need of telling. I’ve dedicated my life to telling stories about places that need protection, wildlife that’s under threat, a world overrun by humans.

Conservation is a field that requires one to be an optimist. Mainly because, at the moment, it is so often full of gloom. It’s hard not to get bogged down with all the threats to our environment. But here we have an opportunity to tell a different kind of story: one of conservation victory, of lands being protected and waterways upheld.

We’re at the crossroads of history. Never, since the birth of our country, has a state government ever forced an oil corporation to shut down one of their pipelines. Governor Whitmer’s decision to revoke Enbridge’s Line 5 easement is monumental for this reason. If it’s upheld in court, this sets a precedent for other states, other pipelines, other waterways and tribal lands to be protected against the constant threat of an oil spill. So we’ve joined the fight too.

My role as director is to make an engaging, compelling film that will inspire Michiganders and conservationists alike to rally in support of our leaders and get this pipeline shut down, once and for all. I hope you will join us.

Sincerely,

Davis

In Davis’s young career, he has captured some truly amazing photos. Some so amazing that, as a long time friend, I was a bit shocked they came from my friend and not Nat Geo. It’s just, well, I’ve known him since we were five. We used to get grounded by our parents together. I saw what he was producing in art class… But now he has awards from places like the Smithsonian and the National Wildlife foundation! Please scroll through some of his work below and check out the rest of his work on his website. Its worth the click!   –   William
